"Trust me, I was on both knees," Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. "You picture the way you win a big game like that...you make a shot...you celebrate or something happens...you congratulate all your coaches and players. This was not one of those deals. I just wanted to make sure that I hurried up and shook hands and the officials left the court so they couldn't put any time back on the clock."
The Jayhawks narrow win of 59-57 over tiny Davidson yesterday rids Coach Self of the dreaded "best coach never to make the Final Four" label. Self had fallen short with 3 different schools including last year's Jayhawks. This year this team had too much talent, depth and experience to miss out.
Tiny Davidson, a 1,700-student southern conference school, came within 2 points of the Final Four and ran out of gas in the end. Davidson's Stephen Curry, son of former NBA sharpshooter Dell Curry, named Most Outstanding Player of the Midwest Regional stated, "Fatigue was definitely a factor. That four-guard rotation they (Jayhawks) had really took a toll. They had a lot of bodies and a lot of athletic guys who could chase me."
The Kansas Jayhawks (35-3) will play overall # 1 seed, the North Carolina Tar Heels, on April 5 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. UCLA and Memphis will round out the party.
